About the Author

Dave Saldana is a Deputy Editorial Director at Media Matters for America.* He has worked as writer, attorney and college professor. He taught journalism at the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communications at Iowa State University, and was a media critic for Iowa Public Radio.

After a long and successful career as an Emmy Award-winning television news producer at media outlets like MTV News, New York 1, and CBS, he went to law school and became a civil rights and First Amendment attorney, representing the late comedian Warren Thomas, among others. He has also been active in labor and workers’ rights, worked as a union organizer, and was for a time the Communications Director for the United Electrical, Radio & Machine Workers of America (UE).

His professional interest is now in teaching students to become good journalists. His research is on journalism ethics and professional standards, as well as political satire in the public discourse. He has presented several papers on the topic, including analyses of the political content of “Borat,” and “The Daily Show” as a new form of journalism.

He has also worked occasionally as a comedy writer, and as a freelance magazine writer on topics from punk rock to golf. He is presently writing a book on political satire.

He received a BA in Journalism from University of California-Santa Cruz, an MS from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, and a JD from University of Southern California Law School.

He is a member of the International Society for Humor Studies, the American Humor Studies Association, the Modern Language Association, and the National Lawyers Guild.

    Impressive resume, Mr. Saldana (except the part about the law degree from $C, of course!) I think any political discussion of Borat should necessarily include the parallels of the naked wrestling scene to how liberals and conservatives interact with each other (both on the Hill and in the bathroom stalls of the greater D.C. area.)
